In the 80’s, I purchased a newly constructed townhouse. 850 days later, 2 1/2 years, a natural gas leak was discovered once enough odor was in the gas. After the gas leak was discovered, several people said to me, “You created the gas leak. You created that reality.”

And, how did I create that reality? Life happens. I did not create the gas leak. I did not sever the gas pipe. Life happens.

I am not convinced that when a plane crashes that all the passengers and crew chose to create that reality. When a hurricane blows in and blows all the houses down, the homeowners did not get together and say, “Oh, today would be a good day to lose our homes and all of our priceless treasures.”

The way in which I believe we create our reality is the beliefs we have. All of our thoughts and feelings, choices and decisions, actions and reactions are based on our beliefs.

For example, let’s say that someone has just asked you out for tea. You wonder why? They couldn’t possibly find you interesting or attractive because you know you aren’t. You think, “What do they want from me? If they are asking me for tea, they must want something from me. I had better be on my guard.”

If, instead, you knew you were an interesting person, great conversationalist, enjoyed meeting new and interesting people, your thoughts might be: “Wow. I get to meet someone new that seems very interesting. They have a twinkle in their eye so they must be a little mischievous which will be fun. I’m looking forward to spending time with this person!”

A victim has different beliefs than a victor. Someone that feels sorry for themselves, “Oh, poor woe is me” has different beliefs than someone who rolls up their sleeves and goes to work. Someone that wants a guarantee before taking action has different beliefs than someone who knows that life does not offer guarantees. Someone who avoids life has different beliefs than someone who loves life and throws themselves into everything they do.

The way we interact with life is based on our beliefs. This is the manner in which we create our reality.
